Chapter Five

While the sweet and spicy scents of pastries drifted through the open door to the kitchen and swirled about the cook’s study, Jami stared out the large window on the other side of the room. Snowflakes floated and glided through the frosty air to land lightly. She shivered. Three weeks here and she still wasn’t used to seeing cold, white, precipitation falling from the sky. She shivered again. The slow, wafting descent prompted memories of Marc’s skillful hands. Two nights ago had been the fifth time they’d had sex since the swimming pool, and she was getting very used to it, even if Marc still wouldn’t address her as anything other than Princess.

Biting her lip, she stared at the cook’s table without seeing anything on it. She certainly couldn’t complain about a lack of sex. With Marc, it was almost indescribably amazing. She was so content with his lovemaking she had no desire for anyone else, not even when she’d stumbled accidentally upon two of the hermaphroditic maids who invited her to join their sexual tryst, something she thought she’d wanted to experience. The sight of the writhing, naked bodies had not aroused anything other than a mild intellectual interest in her. Why was that? Why was Marc the only person she thought about sexually anymore?

She shivered for the third time.

“Are you cold, Princess?”

Pulling herself back to the present, Jami shook her head.

Tannis, the cook, handed her a white pastry. “Try this.”

She bit into it. Closing her eyes, she moaned. After swallowing, she said, “I vow, Tannis, when I go back to Mediria, you are going with me. There’s not a pastry chef there to rival you.”

He chuckled but shook his head. “I value my skin too much. My wife has threatened to skin me alive if I come back.”

Jami finished the pastry. “What in the world did you ever do to her? I’ve always found Aradabs to be pretty even tempered -- unless you’re talking about security. They become absolutely obsessive about security.”

He handed her another pastry -- this one covered with thick, red frosting. “She found me in the water with a Nissian and jumped to the wrong conclusion.”

“Oh?” Jami bit into the new pastry and sighed with pleasure.

He grinned. “Well, I was kissing her.”

She swallowed then chuckled. “Tannis, you’re incorrigible. Are you sure there’s no Drakian ancestor somewhere in your lineage? But you’re the best pastry chef I’ve ever met. I’m glad you’re here. Brianna will love your pastries.”

“As long as you’re satisfied, Princess, I am content.” He handed her a third treat -- this one larger and a dark brown color.

Jami bit into it, swallowed, and groaned. “I’m going to gain twenty pounds before this party is over.”

After finishing the treat, she eyed Tannis. “How is the costume coming along?”

He smiled. Of all the inhabitants of the chalet, Tannis was the most enthusiastic about the party, attempting anything she asked. “Magnificently! One of the seamstresses in the village had some wonderful red material of Deslossian wool, and she had some fake white fur tucked away in a trunk.
